Allyson

Diagnosis:

In June 2004, Allyson was discovered to have neuroblastoma.

Allyson's Story:

"Why didn't I feel it before now?"

That's what Allyson's father asked himself after he raced to his daughter's side following a frantic call from his wife, Holly.

Holly had taken Allyson to her 12-month checkup. The little girl had been suffering from a low grade fever, but the Camerons thought their little girl was in the first stages of chicken pox. A case had been reported at her day care just two weeks prior. Chicken pox seemed the logical conclusion. Cancer certainly never entered his or his wife's mind. "One doesn't go around feeling their seemingly healthy child's stomach for tumors for no reason," he said.

The pediatrician had noticed a mass in Allyson's stomach during examination. He told Holly he wanted to do a CT scan, prompting her to call her husband. The call came later that evening. It was not chicken pox. It was cancer. Allyson had a large mass on her right side and a smaller mass on her left, both above the kidneys.

Ally has undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor (including about three-quarters of her adrenal gland) and a bone marrow transplant to eliminate the tumor. In February of this year, the neuroblastoma was declared to be in remiss
